Washington Quarter
Auction and Coin Market Price guideThe Washington quarter was created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. As is the process with the design of new coins, a competition was held to produce a design modeled after the bust of Washington created by French sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon. Laura Gardiner Fraser, wife of James Earle Fraser, the creator of the buffalo nickel, was chosen. However, Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon insisted on the design of John Flanagan who studied under Augustus Saint-Gaudens instead.
