The State Quarters are a result of President Bill Clinton signing into law the 50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act on December 1, 1997. Beginning in 1999, five state quarters were issued per year to commemorate each of the 50 states. The front of these coins still feature the previous George Washington design. On the back, however, state landmarks, landscapes, historically significant buildings, symbols of state resources or industries, official state flora and fauna, state icons and state outlines are represented.
