The Seated Liberty depicted on this quarter was based on Engraver Christian Gobrecht's design already seen on the silver dollar, half dime and dime. Due to Mint policy of having a standard design on all coins made from the same metal, the same stars on the obverse of the dollars, dimes and half dimes appear on this coin. In 1840, London sculptor Robert Ball Hughes was hired to make modifications to Gobrecht's design. As a result, he created additional drapery on Liberty from her left elbow down over her knee. This additional drapery is now used as a point of distinction amongst Seated Liberty quarters of this era.
