Shield nickels were produced during the Civil War, and like the three cent nickel and three cent silver, Shield nickels were the government's response to the hoarding of coins. These coins were composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, and featured a shield on the front and the Roman numeral five surrounded by stars on the back. The shield nickel was the first ever five-cent coin minted in the United States, and was also the first nickel with a face value of five cents. Due to nickel being an extremely hard metal, many of these coins have flaws.
