Jefferson Nickel
Auction and Coin Market Price guideThe Jefferson nickel was born as a result of a competition held by the U.S. Government to find a new design for the five-cent nickel depicting Thomas Jefferson and his Virginian home, Monticello. The winning artist, Felix Schlag, based his design on the marble bust of Jefferson as depicted by sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. After some changes were made to the original design, the Jefferson nickel went into production in September 1938. During World War II, the Jefferson nickel was composed of copper, manganese and silver as nickel was needed for the war effort.
