These early half dimes were the very first coins authorized by President George Washington under the Mint Act of 1792, and were produced before the completed construction of the Mint buildings. Thomas Jefferson, Washington's secretary of state accepted the coins on his behalf. It is thought that Martha Washington may have posed for these coins which depict a female representation of liberty, however, this is unsubstantiated.
