The Seated Liberty depicted on this coin shares the same design as the half dime, twenty cent piece, quarter, half dollar and silver dollar. The design was originally sketched by Chief Engraver William Kneass as Liberty sitting on a rock holding a staff in one hand and a shield in the other with the word Liberty inscribed on it. However, after a stroke he was unable to complete the process. It was Christian Gobrecht who was able to bring the Seated Liberty dime to life from Kneass' sketch.
